Succsess For Clearys Boxing Gym

Boxing: Title glory for Greenfield

BUBBLING ‘Suga’ Sean Greenfield enhanced his growing reputation by lifting the ABA Senior Novice Championship Class A 57kgs title on Sunday.
The talented 18-year-old Cleary’s ABC prospect impressed a capacity crowd and the watching England selectors by powering to a convincing points victory over the previously unbeaten Glenn Coe (Royal Navy).
Greenfield dominated the final with his crisp and powerful punching and the only surprise was the winning margin of 18-10 which flattered Coe.Delighted gym owner Edwin Cleary said: “Sean breezed it. He made it look very easy without being arrogant and cocky.“He received a massive reception but the scoring astounded everybody as it was a lot easier.“He has been a level above throughout the championships and my phone hasn’t stopped ringing with coaches from around the Midlands calling to pass on their congratulations.”

The success was a major coup for Cleary’s ABC who, in their first year in the championships, have secured five Warwickshire titles, four Midland titles and one national title.
Meanwhile, Cale Sunner’s Royal Navy School championship quarter-final bout was postponed until this Sunday.

Light-welterweight Mike Cole stormed to victory inside 30 seconds by stopping J Maloney (Bath ABC) on a show hosted by Droitwich ABC.
Debutant Myles Vale, grandson of former professional Ronnie, suffered a narrow defeat against A Mackay (Droitwich ABC) despite putting his opponent on the canvas in the first round.

Cleary’s ABC continues to expand and is looking to recruit more coaches who can contact Edwin Cleary on 077233 89774.

Orthodox win for Sean

Southpaw boxer Sean Greenfield’s switch to orthodox paid dividends on Sunday when he stopped Paul Gubb in the second round of their ABA Novice Championships quarter-final.
The Cleary’s ABC boxer caught the previously unbeaten Gubb with a left hook to the body and, although the fighter beat the count, the referee decided he was unfit to continue.
Greenfield had been feeling some discomfort in his left thumb, but he is confident the injury will have healed in time for tomorrow’s national semi-final at Brigg BC in Lincolnshire.

Boxing: 'Suga' Sean Greenhill is 'heading for the top'

TEENAGE hot-shot 'Suga' Sean Greenhill this weekend targets the ABA Novice championship boosted by a performance that left his coach predicting he's heading for the top.
The all-action featherweight from Cleary's ABC is entered in the tournament that starts in Bedworth on Sunday after an early exit from the NACYP championships that left him rueing the luck of the draw.
Greenhill was paired with James Melvin (Hall Green) in his opening contest in Hinckley - and that represented a massive step up in class for the six-fight novice. Coach Edwin Cleary said: "Melvin has won more national titles than Sean has had fights."
Greenhill still spent much of the four-round contest on the attack and according to Cleary "was definitely the stronger of the two," but Melvin's block-and-counter tactics were enough to wrap up a majority points win.
Cleary added: "Sean knows he can compete with the best now. Melvin knew a bit too much, but with a few more fights under his belt, Sean can definitely beat him.
"I expect Sean's boxing to go up a level now."
Greenhill is joined in the ABA Novice championships by clubmates Ben Daley (Class A, 60kgs), Mike Cole (Class A, 63.5kgs), Gary Taylor (Class A, 67kgs) and Jamie Hamblin (Class A, 81kgs).

No disgrace in defeat for Greenfield

TALENTED Cleary's ABC teenager Sean Greenfield surrendered his unbeaten record despite another impressive performance in the first round of the NACYP championships in Coventry on Sunday.
Greenfield, 18, was drawn against the highly experienced defending champion and England international James Melvin (Hall Green) in the opening round and he lost for the first time in eight fights by a majority verdict.
Greenfield, who was making his seasonal bow, more than matched his illustrious opponent throughout the four-round bout but was just edged out on points.
Coach Edwin Cleary said:"Melvin has won more national titles than Sean has had fights but it was a fantastic display and there is absolutely no disgrace in losing to the best in the country.
"It wasn't Sean's best performance but I was really pleased with the way he conducted himself and he has proved he can compete with the best now."
Greenfield now turns his attention to the ABA Novice championships which get under way at Bedworth this Sunday.
He will be joined by Cleary's ABC team-mates Ben Daley, Mike Cole, Gary Taylor and Jamie Hamlin.
